Antalya Museum
The Antalya region is packed full of history and with an abundance of ancient sites and cities along Turkey's breathtaking Mediterranean Coastline, it is hardly surprising that the Antalya Museum is brimming with antique artefacts and historical findings. Behind the museums of Istanbul and Ankara, this museum ranks 3rd among Turkey's archaeological and historical collections and one of the best in the world for its display Roman artefacts. The extensive museum boasts everything from pottery to Roman sculptures to Ottoman weapons, Byzantine, Seljuk Turk, Lycian and Greek objects, some items even date back to the Stone and Bronze Ages. Anatolia's history is both long and complex and the majority of the museum's contents has been brought from ruins and historical sites within the region, including the large coin collection which comes from the trading city of Aspendos.
Open from 8:00 to 17:00, Tuesday to Sunday, the Antalya Museum is located along the seafront just 2 kilometres from Antalya's quirky Kaleici (Old Town), where you can wander through fine examples of Roman structures that are mixed in with the modern cafe's and shops. The last stop on the Nostalji Tram line stands outside of the museum, alternatively, take a pleasant stroll through Antalya's coastal park and enjoy the marvellous view over the sea. If history is your thing then this is one place not to miss and you may also want to pay a visit to the Ancient City of Termessos, Perga and Aspendos.
