Eyup Sultan Mosque

The Eyup Sultan Mosque is one of the most sacred mosques in Istanbul and heavily regarded as one of the most sacred Islamic sites after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem. The mosque houses the tomb of Ebu Eyup el-Ensari, who was said to be Prophet Mohammed's last man standing in his trusted circle of confidants. The mosque also holds a rank of importance as it was also the site of where the Ottoman princes would come for their coronation ceremony. The original mosque that was built by Sultan Mehmet II was levelled in an earthquake in 1766. Sultan Selim III then rebuilt the now standing mosque in 1800.
