Miletus

ANCIENT CITY OF MILETOS

Miletus is south of Kusadasi and home to much less frequently visited ancient ruins. Although accurate settlement dates are unknown due to rising sea levels, there are still magnificent ruins of a theatre. The theatre was constructed during the Hellenistic period, in the 1st century AD. The theatre would have been large enough to hold 15, 000 people and a fortress was built upon it during the Byzantine period. This castle provides a great viewing platform for other surrounding ruins, including a harbour, stadium, agoras, Baths of Faustina and a bouleuterion.

The site is underwater for part of the year, although some people will find this a harder walk, it’s magnificently picturesque.
