A perfect getaway spot. Ucagiz, meaning three mouths, was named after the three openings the village has to the Mediterranean sea. The quaint fishing village is located on Turkey's southwest coast, 39 kilometres east of the modern holiday destination, Kas and 36 kilometres from Demre, which hosts the Ancient Lycian City of Myra. The small village is part of the Kekova Region and has therefore been a Specially Protected Area since 1990. This limits development and building which means that, while other quaint villages along the coast have been turned into holiday resorts, Ucagiz has been able to maintain its charming rural quality.
Very little is known about the ruins of Ucagiz, inscriptions indicate they could date back as far as the 4th century BC. There are ruins of a necropolis, but no city walls or other major structures. The oldest sarcophagus is shaped like a house and has a nude portrait of a young man above it. The portrait seems to have been added after it was constructed, possibly by Romans.
The village is located in a landlocked bay, surrounded by rolling green hills and extensive farmland. It is connected to nearby towns by local buses, and can also be visited by day trip of Blue Cruise from Kas. Ucagiz offers visitors a choice of boutique hotels or more basic Pansiyon. The small harbour is situated in the village centre, a pretty square hosts a handful of tasty fish restaurants that serve only the fresh catch of the day and on the small promenade, you can grab some Turkish ice cream from a traditionally dresses vendor.
