Catalhoyuk
Catalhoyuk is one of the world's most important archaeological sites, located in the Konya Plain of Central Anatolia. Dating back to around 7400 BC, the settlement provides remarkable evidence of early farming communities and one of the earliest examples of large-scale settled life.
The ancient settlement was made up of closely packed mud-brick houses, built without streets between them. People entered many of the homes through openings in the roofs, while the interiors contained wall paintings, reliefs and other remains that provide an insight into the daily and religious life of the community. Catalhoyuk was occupied for more than a thousand years before it was gradually abandoned.
Today, the archaeological site and its visitor centre allow visitors to learn about life in one of the world's earliest permanent settlements. Catalhoyuk was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012 and is considered an important site for understanding the development of settled communities in the Near East.
