Cavusin

Cavusin is a historic village in Cappadocia, located between Goreme and Avanos. Known for its distinctive rock formations and cave dwellings, the village offers a quieter alternative to some of Cappadocia's more visited towns. Its old houses and churches are built into the soft volcanic rock, creating a landscape that is typical of the region.

The village is best known for the abandoned old settlement rising up the hillside. Once home to a large Christian community, Cavusin contains several historic rock-cut churches, including the Church of St John the Baptist, one of the largest cave churches in Cappadocia. Walking through the old village, visitors can explore tunnels, rooms and rock-cut structures while enjoying views across the surrounding valleys.

Cavusin is also well positioned for exploring the nearby valleys and is close to some of Cappadocia's most famous attractions. Its location between Goreme and Avanos makes it an easy stop when travelling through the region.

Old Cavusin Village
The abandoned hillside settlement is the main attraction in Cavusin. The rock-cut homes, tunnels and chambers provide an insight into how people once lived within Cappadocia's unusual volcanic landscape.

Church of St John the Baptist
Dating from the 5th century, the Church of St John the Baptist is one of the most important historic churches in Cavusin. Its large rock-cut interior and surviving decoration make it one of the notable religious monuments in the area.

Cavusin Valley
The surrounding valley is characterised by fairy chimneys, vineyards and unusual rock formations. Walking through the valley offers a quieter way to experience Cappadocia away from the busier tourist centres.
