Neve Shalom Synagogue is one of the most significant landmarks of Istanbul's Jewish heritage, located in Galata, Beyoglu. Its name means “Oasis of Peace”, and the synagogue was built between 1949 and 1951 to serve the growing Jewish community of Galata and Beyoglu. It officially opened on 25 March 1951.
The synagogue is notable for its impressive central dome, large chandelier and stained-glass windows, with the stained-glass designs prepared at the Academy of Fine Arts and the glass imported from England. The building was designed by young architects Elyo Ventura and Bernar Motola, graduates of Istanbul Technical University.
Located on Buyuk Hendek Street, Neve Shalom is a meaningful stop for travellers exploring Istanbul's multicultural heritage. Its location in Galata also makes it easy to combine with Galata Tower, the Museum of Turkish Jews, Ashkenazi Synagogue and Istiklal Street as part of a cultural walking route.
