New Zealand Memorial
The New Zealand Memorial stands on Chunuk Bair, one of the most significant battlefields of the Gallipoli Campaign. The site commemorates the soldiers of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force who fought here during the August offensive of 1915. New Zealand troops captured Chunuk Bair on 8 August, reaching one of the highest points of the Allied advance on the Gallipoli Peninsula before Ottoman forces retook the position two days later.
The memorial was unveiled on 12 May 1925 by General Sir Alexander Godley. Its inscription honours the New Zealand soldiers who fought at Gallipoli and reads, “From the Uttermost Ends of the Earth.” Nearby, the New Zealand Memorial to the Missing records the names of 850 New Zealand servicemen who died during the campaign and have no known grave.
Today, the memorial is part of the Gallipoli Peninsula Historical National Park and offers visitors a quiet place to reflect on the events of 1915. Its position on Chunuk Bair also provides views across the historic battlefield and surrounding peninsula.
