Telmessos was an ancient city located in what is now Fethiye and was one of the important cities of ancient Lycia. The city was known for its oracle and developed into an important centre during the Lycian period. Over the centuries, Telmessos came under Persian, Roman, Byzantine and later Ottoman rule.
Today, the most visible remains include the ancient theatre, located close to Fethiye Harbour, and the famous Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliffs above the town. The theatre was built during the Roman period and originally had a capacity of around 6,000 spectators. Its location close to the modern town makes Telmessos an easy historical stop when visiting Fethiye.
