The Ancient City of Ephesus
Ephesus is one of the most perfectly preserved ancient cities on earth. In 133 BC it was established to be the capital of the Roman Empire's section of Asia and at its height over 200,000 inhabited the city. Many great innovations were created here, as many great philosophers and inventors came from Ephesus.
Being right at the mouth of the Cayster River and near the Mediterranean Sea, the location was ideal for international trading. This became a major crossroad for the Roman Empire and the main port of entry to Anatolia. The city is also perfected situated in the middle of a fertile valley.
The ruins of the city itself are extensive and you can spend hours exploring all of it, including the theatre, library, and gymnasium. From a religious centre of early Christianity to a centre of commerce, to becoming a major tourist site, Ephesus has an interesting, rich history.
Temple Of Artemis
This magnificent structure is known as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Although you can only see the base of this structure, it is a sturdy structure from the Hellenistic Age which was made fully of marble from the columns to the base. In the 6th century, there were 36 large columns that have worn well through the ages and in fact, part of the archaic structure is preserved and on view in London at the British Museum.
House Of Virgin Mary
House of Virgin Mary is one of the most religiously significant sites in Ephesus. The rise of Christianity supposedly began right in the city and it is believed that the Virgin Mary spent the remainder of her life here in this humble home.
