Istanbul Old City Tour

No visit to Turkey is complete without touring Istanbul's old capital named Constantinople by the Romans, this city is a treat for the eyes and history is imprinted with every turn. Some of the worlds most beautiful mosques and palaces are here and today's guided tour will show you the best the city has to offer. Starting at the beautiful blue mosque also named the Sultan Ahmed Mosque this amazing building has been a place of worship continuously since 1616. The ceramics and multi-domed ceiling inside are breathtaking.
You will also visit Sultan Ahmet Square where once stood the great Hippodrome that pre-dates the Roman era. This was a place of frequented daily life and entertainment such as sport and circuses the hub of social life including horse and chariot racing. It is believed that the Hippodrome of Constantinople could seat over 100,000 people.
In the centre, you will find the ancient Obelisk of Theodosius taken from the temple of Karnak in Egypt in the 4th century BC, carved from red granite from the city of Aswan in southern Egypt The base is marble and Roman and depicts various scenes from chariot races or of the Roman Emporer.
Another stunning building you will visit is the Hagia Sophia, over the centuries she has been a church a museum and a mosque and was built using over 10,000 people. The interior decoration is breathtaking and ample from the two marble doors one representing heaven the other hell, to the incredible mosaics, the colours of which have not diminished over the years and are as vibrant as ever.
Next, you will move on to one of the most important buildings of the city the Topkapi palace home of the Sultans and their many wives and also an administrative centre for over 400. Construction began in 1459 and was awarded the UNESCO world heritage site certificate in 1985. The building and grounds are extensive, but perhaps the most intriguing and the most highly decorated is the inner courtyard and living quarters, no one was permitted to enter unless you had permission from the sultan himself and it is here that the harems and private quarters of the household are located.
The last part of the city that you visit today will be the grand bazaar and grand it is the largest and oldest continuously trading market in the world, the alleyways that crisscross this colossal market are narrow and brightly decorated selling everything you can imagine, containing over 4000 shops you will be amazed at the sights and sounds within.

Our recommendation:
After the day's tour ends and you have your own free time, we recommend also visiting the Spice Bazaar to enjoy the amazing sights and smells. You will be on your own here as its not part of your tour package, you will have lots of time to look around and make your own way back to your accommodation.
