Sumela Monastery Tour
No trip to Trabzon is complete without a visit to the mind-boggling Sumela Monastery. Carved dramatically into the side of a steep cliff, 300 metres above the valley below, the basic core of the structure is over 1600 years old, with expansion continuing for over a thousand years. The monastery was still in use as a Greek educational institution right up until the creation of the Turkish Republic in 1923.
Your tour to visit this dazzling masterpiece of architecture and history will begin in the city of Trabzon at 9 am. After one hour of travelling time, you will arrive at the monastery where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Altindere Valley.
From the monastery, you will also explore the beautiful Karaca Cave, 1500 metres above sea level, full of stalactites and stalagmites, and many unusual cave plants. The final stop on the tour will be the village of Hamsikoy, where you can try the unique and delicious local rice pudding.
The tour begins and ends in Trabzon, and includes lunch, transport, entry fees and professional guide service.
